Plus there was a bit of a twist this time...in addition to participating in Push, Pull, Pedal, I also ran the Madison Marathon May 30th as a member of Team Carter. Here's a bit of the little man's story....
March 17, 2009 was a life-changing day. My nephew, Carter Everett Kolman was born...and from day one he had to fight for the life most of us take for granted. He was born with a Congenital Heart Defect called Tetralogy of Fallot...along with his diagnosis were many complications and additional pieces of the puzzle. But in the end he had seven surgeries and spent 3 1/2 months at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. He came home with a feeding tube and some oxygen and he'll let us know when he's done with both of those. Until then, we're just waiting for him to get bigger and stronger and then...watch out world!
We're so lucky to have a hospital like Children's just an hour away in Milwaukee. Yes the UW Hospital is a fabulous place, but even they send all 'heart babies' to Children's because it's the best place to be.
Carter has taught me to be a better person. His smile warms my heart and his voice weakens my knees. These are the kinds of kids we need around to remind us all that life is so fragile and to make the best of every single day. I figured that if Carter can go through that much in the first three months of life...I can run a dang marathon. And with his face on my mind the entire time, I did.
So please, sponsor me in Push, Pull, Pedal and rejoice with me in crossing the finish line of the Madison Marathon. It's all in honor of keeping the Herma Heart Center in the Children's Hospital running smoothly to keep Carter healthy and to save the lives of 'heart babies' to come.
