Fundraising Page for 16th Annual Stroll for Strong Kids & 5K
June 2, 2012 at University of Rochester, River Campus
Lauren Paige Olander was a typical five year-old. She had just finished pre-school and was excited to start kindergarten in the fall. She loved playing with her friends, swimming, soccer, dance and exploring the great outdoors. Lauren was proud to have just become a big sister and looking forward to going to the family's cottage that summer with her baby brother for the first time and showing him everything there was to do there.
On June 4, 2011, Lauren was diagnosed with biphenotypic acute leukemia. After two weeks of treatment, Lauren's leukemia was drastically improving, but her little body just couldn't take the chemotherapy required and she died of an abdominal sepsis on Sunday, June 19th.
The Child Life staff at Golisano Children's Hospital, without a doubt, made a difference in Lauren's quality of life during her short time there. She looked forward to their daily activities and enjoyed playing on the hospital's outdoor play deck. These services allow children to be children while hospitalized and the staff help take the scary out of a very scary situation.
We would like to thank you, our amazing friends, for your generous support of this very special event. Through your donations and participation it is our hope that other families facing difficult life-changing illnesses and circumstances will continue to receive the outstanding care and services of Golisano Children's Hospital that we did.
Our broken hearts are still very heavy with grief. Not a day, hour or minute goes by that we don't think of and miss our sweet Lauren.
Andy & Eleanor Olander
